About this product:
We’ve separated these super cosy blanket yarns as they are something special.
Nestled in amongst the huge bales of 100% woollen selvedges we get from the mills in Yorkshire, we sometimes find something that we can't bear to part with – cashmere.
Previously, after balling up our yarns into 250g balls, we have been mixing them into our other blanket yarn listings. However, these cashmere selvedges are so beautifully soft and fabulous to work with that we have now created a separate space where you can browse at leisure and know that you're getting the very best.
Cashmere is the epitome of softness, luxury, and warmth - you won't find anything cosier to craft with.
Explore our cashmere rug making strips of fabric here and treat yourself to a bit of luxury!
As usual, these balled up strips of blanket and scarf can be used for most techniques of rag rug making, including shaggy (proggy), short shaggy, loopy (rug hooking), peg loom weaving, locker hooking, weaving, braided rag rugs, twining and more... For a summary of the techniques of rag rugging, check out our "About" page here. These woven woollen blanket strips are ideal for making long-lasting rugs, sophisticated cushions and much more.
Why blanket yarn is great:
100% Wool Blanket Yarn has fast become one of our favourite materials to rag rug with for a number of reasons:
1) It's 100% wool, so is not only super soft, but also excellent quality. It's an absolute pleasure to work with, and any rug or cushion made in blanket yarn will last for generations. Our cashmere yarns are even more beautifully soft than our regular woollen selvedges.
2) Our Ragged Life Blanket Yarn comes pre-cut into strips, which saves on cutting time. We recommend cutting the strips in half for ease of use and to make them go further, but that takes considerably less time than breaking down any item of clothing into strips. The strips range in width from 1.5-5cm in width, but are generally around 3cm wide.
3) It looks gorgeous when rag rugged. The texture and depth of colour is just lovely. Don't believe us, check out our Blanket Yarn Inspiration Blog Post here.
4) It's sustainable. Blanket yarn is the selvedge strips from blanket and scarf production in Yorkshire, so you can rest assured that every ball you use is less wastage going to landfill.
5) It goes far. Blanket yarn is thick, which means that it covers the hessian much quicker than most fabrics. This means that you can rag rug further apart and your rag rug creation will be done in no time.
One 250g ball of our blanket yarn covers one 40 x 40cm cushion front in the loopy, rug hooked technique. It takes two 250g balls to cover the same area in the shaggy / proggy style of rag rug making. If in doubt about how much to buy, feel free to get in touch here.
