Off the back of my 2024 trip to the US, I thought it would be fun to run a half day taster session where I teach rug hooking as it's done by our neighbours across the pond. Experience the loopy (hooked) technique of rag rugging as you've never done it before. Have fun trying out different rug frames and working into linen rug canvas (as opposed to our usual hessian), all whilst cutting strips using fancy fabric strip cutting machines and keeping your loops uniformly stacked. This is an experimental class, which we've never run before and may never run again, so book a space while you can. Includes all materials & refreshments.

In this relaxed and creative beginners class, we’ll show you how to transform simple cotton rope into stunning designs using a sewing machine. Don’t worry if you don’t have a machine—you can practice on one of ours. However, if you do have one at home, feel free to bring it along. It’s always best to learn on the machine you’ll be using later. NB: You definitely don't need to be a sewing machine whizz to do this class - all that's needed is a basic zig zag stitch!
During the workshop, you’ll pick up handy tips for working with the rope, learn how to start circular and oval flat pieces and will have plenty of time to experiment with different shapes, colours, and patterns. By the end of the session, you’ll have at least one finished placemat or multiple coasters to take home. What's more, you'll have the know-how to keep making more! Includes materials & refreshments.

Learn how to make beautiful, spiral-woven braid-in rag rugs. Elspeth will showcase different techniques and design possibilities before students get hands-on making a braid-in placemat (which can be continued into a rug at home or finished as a placemat in the class). In this style of braided rag rug, tails are worked in as you weave, so no stitching together is required at the end.

Rug twining is one of the least well known rag rug techniques from our second book "Rag Rug Techniques for Beginners". It's generally built up on a basic wooden loom and produces beautiful, compact rugs - examples of which you can see here.
In this beginners half day workshop, you will use old clothing and rags to twine a wire basket, learning along the way how to prepare materials, how to twine, how to create patterns and how to finish off twined creations. Everything you learn in the class can be applied to other twined projects.
You won't finish the whole basket in the class, but you will go home with the knowledge needed to finish it off at home and can take any fabrics with you to continue your project. Includes all materials & refreshments.
